I'm running Arch on my ThinkPad T440p with a quad-core i7 4910mq with intel integrated graphics and I am having less than stellar performance on my 34 inch ultrawide. I'm connected via display port. My system is really snappy and responsive when I'm on my laptop's native screen (1920 x 1080) but when I connect to my ultrawide things just feel a lot more sluggish - there is a slight but noticeable delay when resizing windows or even just typing. My Windows installation, however, runs just as smooth at ultrawide as it does at 1080p. Does anyone have any idea what could cause this, or if there is anything I could try? I have an old 1080p and 1440p monitor sitting around I could test with but but I can't think of any reason what the would tell me that we don't already know. I'm on KDE Plasma. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You shouldn't have any problems with Intel HD in terms of drivers, so let's just skip driver installation part. Which display server are you running right now? Wayland or Xorg?

I'm using Xorg.

While Xorg may be more stable and have better compatibity, Wayland is “way” faster. If there is no obligatory reason why you can not leave X, giving the newer software a shot may not be a bad idea.
Note: One of my friends had to switch to Wayland due to performance issues too. He had a 4K monitor on his Lenovo Thinkpad. This may be a flaw of X. I’ve never had money to buy even a 1080P monitor, so I couldn’t say for certain. However, I suspect both of you have the same model. So, if it worked for him, it should work for you too, I guess?

Plugged into my 1080p monitor and things are running smoothly. I think I'll try giving Wayland a go. Not sure what the differences are, I'll have to do some research.
