5.5 Xorg page allocation failure BUG unable to handle page fault

I have two crashes that happened a few days apart after at least a day of machine on time. These crashes have happened recently.  I'll have KDE locked, and will come back to all screens dark and keyboard unresponsive. I think it is crashing as I hit the first key upon returning to my computer. I usually hit the Ctrl key to wake the machine up.

This happened again today on kernel 5.5.6. This time the computer was not locked, just sitting with KDE desktop running, and was crashed already when I arrived back at the computer.

Is there any update on this issue? I also experience this crash about once a week or so. It mostly (always?) happens whilst running Virtualbox with a Windows 10 guest. Just today I left my computer for a bit and when I came back I could see the clock and status bar still updating, but as soon as I tried to switch into the Virtualbox guest window, it all froze up. I think this would have happened regardless of what key I pressed though, and I think I've experienced this when trying to move the mouse as well (not certain).

I've pasted the output from journalctl below. Everything seems pretty much the same as the logs posted here previously. The call traces seem to indicate problems with nvidia and nvidia_modeset, but I have no idea where to start debugging that.

Re: 5.5 Xorg page allocation failure BUG unable to handle page fault

It's the second time I get this crash too. Both times while trying to "wake up" my screen, which was turned off by DPMS.

This was on kernel 5.7.8 with (TKG patches) + NVIDIA driver 450.57.

Apparently this has been reported to NVIDIA as well, but they don't seem to care very much (color me surprised), even with logs generated with nvidia-bug-report.sh being sent to them:

Re: 5.5 Xorg page allocation failure BUG unable to handle page fault

I also have this problem. Had 3 crashes in the past 2 weeks, all when waking the monitor. Tried updating linux/nvidia but no change. Currently on 5.8.1-arch1-1 and 450.57-9. I tried switching to nouveau, but according to people in #nouveau, my GPU does not support manual reclocking, so it's basically unusable (50 fps in games where I usually get 250).

I just got one of those, but for me is the first time and it happened when there was much dick activity, i don't know if it is related.
Now i'm trying the workaroung described here:
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1915823

...but i can't say if it will succeed, because my monitor is copnnected to the intel igp and i use nvidia via prime render offload, so it is a bit weird that this is happening.
Also, i just forced: nvidia-drm.modeset=0 in my boot
options, just in case.

I tried HardDPMS false and it didn't work for me. I've gotten 2 crashes with it enabled.

I also tried the HardDPMS fix and it did not resolve the crashes, is there an open ticket for this issue yet?
Is there anything else we all have in common that is crashing our setups?

Same thing on AMD Ryzen started happening in 5.8 kernel for me with Nvidia.
If I ssh into my box and sudo reboot it won't come back without powering off.
Maybe try and roll back the nvidia driver? I've noticed some odd behavior in recent updates like GUI windows drag/move are very choppy.

Yeah, I noticed that as well. I waited several minutes, but only was able to reboot my computer by holding down the power button. I think it's related to the following journal output (which occurred several minutes after executing reboot over ssh, probably about when I manually powered down the machine)

Found this on the nvidia developer forums, looks like something is consuming memory, in my case it's my stupid backup software and the nvidia kernel modules crash from my understanding.

Put simply, low memory situation, the nvidia driver needs to do something and tries to allocate memory, does not get it fast enough and crashes.

But what I wanted to share is a tip: I can confirm that CTRL+ALT+F1 switching to console and back (CTRL+ALT+F7) gets my desktop unfrozen.

See https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1938113 for pointers on how to apply it to the current dkms package. I've had no crashes so far after applying that.
