Long story short, didn't update for a week whilst I was working in another OS, updated yesterday.
Since then whenever Chromium is open on Youtube or Facebook, the screen goes blank and then wakes up with a keyboard press or mouse click, then goes blank again a second or two later, does this repeatedly and persistently, making it unusable.
I performed another full system update, no change in behaviour.
I disabled hardware acceleration in chromium, no change in behaviour.
I re-installed the Nvidia package, no change in behaviour.
I cleared the browser cache and cookies, no change in behaviour.
Finally, I re-installed the Chromium package, this resolved the issue for me.
I hope this helps anyone else who finds this issue.

EDIT: Problem is still intermittent with youtube but appears to be resolved for Facebook. I think this may be a Chromium Experiment going awry with screen focus or something...
If this continues I may have to look at either rolling back the version by a week or maybe changing to another browser alltogether.

This issue was difficult to track down but appears to be a bug in xfce4 power manager. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=253593
