Logging out of system

Hello everyone, I am new to arch and have been having an issue with logging out of any desktop environment or window manager. It just gives me a blank screen with an underscore in top left corner of screen. It is a real pain to deal with, please help.

The most important question is "how do you log IN to begin with"?
(Startx, some DM - which, …)
