Thinkpad W510 hang on suspend (nouveau)

I have a old Thinkpad W510 with NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics.  After updating Arch on Mar-28 I found that it would freeze on suspend if X was running:

Mar 28 19:46:11 w5 systemd-logind[727]: Lid closed.
Mar 28 19:46:11 w5 systemd-logind[727]: Suspending...
Mar 28 19:46:11 w5 NetworkManager[808]: <info>  [1585446371.5805] manager: sleep: sleep requested (sleeping: no  enabled: yes)
Mar 28 19:46:11 w5 NetworkManager[808]: <info>  [1585446371.5808] manager: NetworkManager state is now ASLEEP
Mar 28 19:46:12 w5 systemd[1]: Reached target Sleep.
Mar 28 19:46:12 w5 systemd[1]: Starting Suspend...
Mar 28 19:46:13 w5 systemd-sleep[2443]: Suspending system...
Mar 28 19:46:13 w5 kernel: PM: suspend entry (deep)

requiring a hard reset to power down and reboot.  Having no idea how to debug this, I tried switching from nouveau to nvidia-340xx (from AUR), and suspend/resume started working again.

Just FYI, though I'd be willing to work with anybody interested in debugging it.  I can't say how recent the problem might be, since prior to Mar-28 the laptop hadn't been updated in over a year.
