Hey Arch Linux community,
I have a somewhat annoying issue with the NVIDIA proprietary drivers installed on my desktop with an NVIDIA GTX 1070. I installed the latest driver through the nvidia package and after I've noticed a significant delay loading into Xorg.
When I type startx into the tty, it takes around 5 seconds before the tty disappears and another 2 seconds before the WM is shown. This also occurs when I switch back and forth between Xorg and the other ttys.
Meanwhile on Linux Mint with the NVIDIA proprietary drivers installed, when I type startx the tty immediately disappears and the WM is shown within another 2 seconds. This is much less jarring and I can't seem to find a way to fix the extra delay that happens on Arch.
There's nothing that stands out in the Xorg.log and I haven't added any modules to my mkinitcpio.conf.
Any suggestions?

Three things might be of relevance here, ensure you aren't running into early boot entropy issues and make the nvidia driver use the modesetting interface to minimize modeswitches, by adding
random.trust_cpu=on nvidia-drm.modeset=1to your kernel parameters
You should also make sure that your .xinitrc follows the template outlined in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc note the blue boxes.
Should these not be sufficient, post after logging into the system the complete output of
systemd.analyze critical-chain
sudo journalctl -bOffline

Unfortunately, after adding the kernel parameters and regenerating the GRUB config nothing seems to have changed, although the system does go black for a second when first showing the tty (assuming this is the NVIDIA driver loading). I also directly copied the template xinitrc file and changed the end to "exec i3", which didn't help either.

All of that looks generally alright. What's the kernel/xorg/nvidia versions on Linux Mint ? It might be a recent regression or so. Maybe also try to find config differences i'm not sure what general patches Mint/Ubuntu make here. E.g. do they maybe adjust the cpu scheduler defaults or preload drivers in the initramfs or so (or do they use another tty emulator)?
Based on what we have so far my only other immediate suggestion is to try and go all in with the early load, by actually adding the nvidia modules to the initramfs: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NV … de_setting though as it generally seems to load alright I don't think this will have much of an impact.

Ok, I tried both adding the NVIDIA modules to the mkinitcpio.conf and using the nvidia-lts with the linux-lts kernel. Both did not solve the problem, although using the LTS version does not produce the warning in journalctl that Lone_Wolf noted.

Running xinit without sudo causes an error saying "unable to connect to X server: Connection refused" and with sudo it just tries to run xterm (which I don't have installed).
I have not modified the xserverrc file.

~mitchell/.xinitrc is the one that says "exec i3" but running "xinit" mitchell as gets you the /etc/xinitrc behavior???
Do not sudo-run xinitrc or startx, check all file permissions in your home directory.

After copying xserverrc to my home directory and adding "vt$XDG_VTNR", the xinit command runs identically to startx. The annoying 5 second delay is still there. The reason I initially ran xinit as sudo was because without adding the VT specifier, xinit failed saying "Cannot open /dev/tty0 (permission denied)".

I also tried installing "nvidia-settings" and saving a resolution to Xorg through there, but the issue is still present.

However if I stop for a few seconds then try and switch again, the delay comes back.

Nothing appears in dmesg while changing resolution, and the output of xrandr is just

I am not using any kind of adapter, just one DisplayPort cable directly from my monitor to my GPU.
I reinstalled Linux Mint and looking at the log, the NVIDIA drivers are much faster to modeset.

Back in Arch, I've noticed if I use GDM and Gnome the delay when modesetting is gone. The ~5 second delay only happens when running Gnome/i3 through startx. However, there is a separate delay which is not related to modesetting when I switch from X to tty and back.

It's more about the the driver handling stages in the DP chain than an actual HW issue.
If you use GDM and Gnome, are you using wayland?
The other thread (from 2015) was very most likely because GDM/Gnome tried to run on wayland, failed couple of times until accepting that this won't work and fall over to X11.
I'd suggest to try the 390xx drivers, but they're currently only available in AUR (building the kernel module can take some minutes, it's advisable to use the nvidia-390xx-dkms package to not break on kernel updates)

I installed the nvidia-390xx and nvidia-390xx-utils packages from the AUR and the issue seems to have stopped. However it's unusual how the version 400+ drivers work fine in Linux Mint, while in Arch they are a bit buggy.

You could try to downgrade the nvidia blob (but will have to build the package locally because older compilations will be incompatible with the current kernel)

OK, turns out I was wrong about Mint using NVIDIA driver version 400+. Apologies.
It uses NVIDIA driver 390 and Linux kernel 5.0.
Tomorrow I will try Ubuntu 19.10 which has NVIDIA driver 435, and see if the problem occurs there.

Ubuntu 19.10 does not have any problems.
It is running Linux kernel 5.3.0 and NVIDIA driver 435 without any delay when logging in through GDM, startx or switching between Xorg and tty.
Do you think the latest Linux kernel available on Arch is creating problems with the driver, or is the NVIDIA driver package on Arch different to the one available on Ubuntu?

Arch currently ships 440.64 and there've been 440.59, 440.48.02, 440.44, 440.36 and 440.31 before the last 435.21 along kernel 5.3.10 in last November…
It's a binary release (same for all distros) w/ a shim to attach to the actual kernel and we already know that the 390xx series isn't, but the lts kernel is affected, so this is likely a regression in the last nvidia 5 releases.
You can either hope that it goes away w/ a future release or try to isolate the breaking release by adapting https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … idia-utils and https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … ges/nvidia ( you can fish the proper sha512sums from https://git.archlinux.org/svntogit/pack … ges/nvidia )
If you want to do this, ensure 435.21 is still good, then start w/ the 440.44 release so you'll only have to try either the two older or two newer releases.
