No sound, but the configuration looks right.

Alsamixer looks good, although initially it is on device - (default)
All I can see is master, which is not muted.

If I switch it to HDA Intel PCH I get all the inputs and outputs which
are not muted.  Although I'm not sure that's the right device.

If I use the mixer panel plugin on xfce, pavucontrol,  I can see left and right channels
and that there is input coming from mplayer, but above the line that shows the sound
level coming in, it says Silence.   And that is what I get.

I really haven't a clue where to go from here. It all looks like it
should work from what I can tell. Maybe I have been looking at it too long.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This is on a current, today, Arch install.

Speaker-test  does not create any sound.

speaker-test -c 2
speaker-test -c 2 -Dsysdefault:PCH
speaker-test -c 2 -Dfront:PCH

speaker-test -c 2 -Dsurround21:PCH   gives an error.

Re: No sound, but the configuration looks right.

both links give a 503 error in french, the server that stores the files seems to be down.

Please post them somewhere else, like on a pastebin ?

output of lspci -k would also be useful .

Re: No sound, but the configuration looks right.

01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM107GLM [Quadro M1000M] (rev a2)
	Subsystem: Pegatron GM107GLM [Quadro M1000M]
	Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia

That card supports Display Port and such cards usually have audio support also, but alsa and lspci don't see any.
What makes this very weird is that linux hasn't loaded any kernel driver for the card.
Are you blacklisting the modules it could use ?

Post full dmesg and/or journacltl -b output please.

Re: No sound, but the configuration looks right.

Looking at dmesg I see that the nvidia card is not working.  And the builtin realtek/intel is recognized, but can't find the irq.  I've checked my bios,
it doesn't have any settings for sound, or much of anything else beyond the usual
secure/fast boot type stuff.  I haven't found "installed OS" anywhere so that's not
something that might change the behavior. The "Set pci=biosirq" message is still
there no matter what I do.

I only just reinstalled Arch on this machine last month. I realized I may have never had sound in the 4 years I used it.  But now I'm repurposing it and I need
sound.   I've poked around in the bios, It is really sparse.

Ok, so remembering some things from the install a few weeks ago. When I did a complete reformat/install.  In order to boot,
I had to add acpi=off  and I have also added pci=biosirq which changed nothing. I still have the irq errors and the suggestion to add the biosirq kerrnel option.
At the time, I found I could go back to the December 2019 version of the LIVE USB with no problems.  Any version after that, turning off ACPI is necessary just to boot.

The bios is up to date. There is no setting for 'OS'.  I turned off secure boot and TPM.

Re: No sound, but the configuration looks right.

A few things stand out :

1.

[ 0.201748] MDS: Vulnerable: Clear CPU buffers attempted, no microcode

You don't appear to have early microcode loading configured , see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Microcode

2.

[ 0.288717] Registered efivars operations
[ 0.000000] efi: EFI v2.40 by INSYDE Corp.

You booted into EFI, but it seems to be an older version .
Are you sure you booted into EFI before the re-install ?

3.
several messages related to MTRR problems
Not sure what they mean, but they shouldn't be there

4.
PCI INT A should only matter for systems with PCI slots, not PCI Express (PCIe) slots.
The lspci output shows you have PCIe slots, so the INTA / biosirq may be a red herring.

5.

[ 0.000000] DMI: Wacom Co.,Ltd Wacom MobileStudio Pro 16/MCALLAN, BIOS MS111 08/10/2018

Looks like this is some kind of tablet computer with customized hardware ?

Re: No sound, but the configuration looks right.

I added the micro-code.  Dmesg looks a lot better.  I haven't gotten any further
than that.  Everything seems to be behaving as before.

journalctl

dmesg

2. I have read that some problems could be eliminated by updating the efi but I
have not seen a way to do that.  The bios is up to date. It's the first thing I did before
installing.  I installed windows just to do that.  My previous system had ACPI on,
but that no longer works since the january 1st version of the kernel.  I did not go down
the path of bisecting to see why.

3. I see the MTRR errors, I do not know what they mean either.

4. I had finally decided there was nothing I could do about the biosirq warnings. And the system seems to be mostly working.  Aside from ACPI and sound.

5. Yes, It's a Wacom mobile studio pro from 2016.  I've had Arch on it since I got it January of 2017.  I don't remember if sound ever worked. I have been living in Europe and using a different computer the last year.  3 years ago I had some difficulty just getting video to work.  It has both the onboard intel chipset and a pcie nvidia card.
Now, for the moment, I'm stuck in the US in confinement, so thought I'd try resurrecting this and put it to some good use.
