Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

Like some other archers I go hit but some issue with SDDM whereby it does not start.
I spent several hours troubleshooting the problem and googlying to no avail so far. So I decided that in order to continue to work and go back to troubleshooting later I would run plasma without SDDM.
I removed sddm, boot the the prompt and like I used to do in the "old days" after login at the prompt I run "startx".
However, it is not running (???!!). Checking Xorg.0.log I can see that it finds a series of devices including nvidia but latter on it fails to start.
I have not does this in ages but I remember having to configure X11, back in the day, but I do not see in the Arch Wiki nothing that leads me to figure out how to do that now.

Here is my Xorg.0.log

BTW, I remember I used to have a xorg.conf but I guess we now use the files from xorg.config.d or should I create one from the output provided by xorg?

Thanks again.

NOTE: I just found the answer to my question in the wiki. I created my xorg.conf from the file created by xorg but I yet fails to startx

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

@koffeinfriedhof

I added startplasma-x11 to my .xinitrc but no joy.
If I execute it manually it replies: "$DISPALY is not set or cannot connect to the X server"

Looks like you're running an intel + nvidia optimus system but configured it wrong.

please post full outputs of lspci -knn , dmesg and/or journalctl -b .
pacman -Qs nvidia output may also be helpful.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

If I read the log correctly it seems to fail to load nvidia into the kernel? Which is odd since it seems to recoginize it is there.

Any ideas?

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

Yep, and the idea has to do with the recent removal of nvidia 390 drivers from repos.
Once you post the stuff I asked for 5 seconds before you posted, we'll probably be sure.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

Why did you generate an xorg.conf?

That's nearly always a bad idea.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

@Slithery,

I generated one because that's what I used to do way back when I started using Linux.
I have not had to do this type of things in at least 6 years, so I'm out of touch "literally" when it comes to xorg.
I can remove my xrog.config if that's better.

@LoneWolf,
I'll get the files you ask for and post. It's a bit slow because I have to go back an forth between two machines, one of the being a mac and I'm not good with Macs. wink

Thank you all for the help.

R.

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

BTW my system was working fine with the nvidia-3900xx until today when an issue with SDDM forced me to try to run  Plasma without it.

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

Which is entirely expected every time there's an update to the kernel. As the package is in the AUR now you need to remember to rebuild and reinstall nvidia-390xx every time there's a kernel update. Since this is, as evident, easily forgotten, you can also install the linux-headers and nvidia-390xx-dkms package which will take care of the necessary rebuilding work whenever there's a kernel update.

Btw, these are heavily truncated only a  single less page  of journalctl, redirect them into a file or use --no-pager to properly post the complete contetns.

Re: Running Plasma Without SDDM [SOLVED]

@V1del,

Yes! You're right.
I just removed the /etc/X11/xorg.config and installed nvidia-390xx-dkms and problem solved.

I'll order online a new nvidia card that is more "modern" to take care of the problem going forward.

Thank you ALL guys for helping!
This community is awesome!! smile
