Low microphone volume levels in GUI applications

I was able to make sound clearer by disabling boost and setting sample rate as stated in above links. Audio recorded using

arecord

is clear and have normal volume but the audio recorded through GUI applications (like firefox, chromium, gnome-sound-recorder etc.) are barely hearable even if I set volume of microphone level to 100% using gnome.

Setting

set-source-volume 1 300000

in /etc/pulse/default.pa only increases sound distortion, I've played with different volume levels but it do not solve the problem.
