nordvpn auto-connect fails with dns issue (+info nordlynx)

Dear community,
I use nordvpn-bin (aur) and the auto-connect feature fails about half of the time on startup like so:

Here is the content of /usr/lib/systemd/system/nordvpnd.service :

Note that I have already added "Wants=network-online.target" otherwise it would never connect automatically on startup.

Should it depend on another service?

Does whatever network service provides the implementation of network-online.target your system uses guarantee DNS resolution will be available with that target?

I m using NetworkManager
The DNS addresses are set to the NordVPN ones:

$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by resolvconf
nameserver 103.86.96.100
nameserver 103.86.99.100

I'm using OpenVpn since NordLynx does not work at all. Here are the NordVPN settings:

$ nordvpn settings
Technology: OpenVPN
Protocol: UDP
Kill Switch: disabled
CyberSec: disabled
Obfuscate: disabled
Notify: enabled
Auto-connect: enabled
DNS: disabled

I just realised that the nordvpn settings have DNS disabled although /etc/resolv.conf has nordvpn dns addresses... Let me try and fix that!

For wireguard you need to install

wireguard-tools
wireguard-arch >> if you have linux kernal and/or
wireguard-lts >> if you have the lts kernal installed.

there is no configuration needed, just the packages installed. (your kernal will reinstall after this)

Sometimes i find it helpful to disable the nordvpn.service and remove the nordvpn-bin along with the ~/.config/nordvpn file. then reboot.

you will of course have to reinstall nordvpn and re enable nordvpnd.

Nope. Wireguard is in the mainline kernel since 5.6.

They use both.

Nordvpn now uses wireguard as well. They just call it NordLynx. It is relatively new for them. I thought i would mention it because it seems a little quicker. Then you have two ways of connecting to nordvpn. If nordlynx isnt working for some reason then use the openvpn

you can switch between the the two by using 

$nordvpn set technology nordlynx (or openvpn)

You can check if it is working using 

$ nord status or
$ sudo wg

After upgrading the kernel to 5.6 wireguard was available. NordLynx works when I manually connect from the command line but does not auto-connect after reboot due to "Temporary failure in name resolution" (once again).

I noticed that it overwrites /etc/resolv.conf after reboot with default 192.168.1.1 . It did not do that with OpenVPN.
When connecting manually from the command line then /etc/resolv.conf populates itself correctly. After reboot it once again sets itself back to default 192.168.1.1

Example just after reboot:

$ nordvpn status
Status: Disconnected

$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
# Generated by NetworkManager
nameserver 192.168.1.1

$ nordvpn settings
Technology: NordLynx
Kill Switch: disabled
CyberSec: disabled
Notify: enabled
Auto-connect: enabled
DNS: 103.86.96.100, 103.86.99.100

$ nordvpn c Australia Melbourne
Connecting to Australia #501 (au501.nordvpn.com)
You are connected to Australia #501 (au501.nordvpn.com)!

$ cat /etc/resolv.conf

I think the 5.6 kernal is giving everyone grief at the moment.... just be patient and it will be up again. Also keep an eye out here for news.

The problem came back after a couple of days. The /etc/resolv.conf file did not contain the NordVPN dns servers as NetworkManager seem to overwrite it sometimes after reboot with the default setting (192.168.1.1)
This line fixes it:

nmcli connection modify <connection_name> ipv4.dns "103.86.96.100 103.86.99.100"

with those addresses being the NordVPN dns servers

Simply put, your computer will set up what it needs to do automatically to connect to the internet. This 192.168.1.1 is your router address. And you do want your computer to talk to the router. Networkmanager will place that info on your resolv.conf file. So in fact, this ip shows that NetworkManager it is working correctly.

As well nordvpn knows what it needs to do. When you do "sudo wg" with wireguard as an example, it is a simple test to see if the tun is established. Same if you do a " ip addr show". you will see a tunnel has been established. It will say tun or nordlynx depending on which mode you are using.

So networkmanager establishes a link to the router and nordvpn will create a tunnel through the router directly to the server...

the 103.86.96.100 and 103.86.99.100 i think you can use in obfuscate mode? maybe. You dont need it. However, inside the app nordvpn-bin you will find that it has one that starts with 99.xx.xx.xxx that it uses to create a tunnel to nord servers, within the app. This is why you dont need it. It kind of compounds the problem when you mess with dns settings (i think).

Sometimes you see symptoms that look like a dns problem. More than likely they can be linked to the killswitch or cybersec problems. These go away with an update for nordvpn-bin.

I would let the networkmanager and nord do its job. So how can it be fixed? Lets do this.

I would remove imutibility using this 

sudo chattr -i /etc/resolv.conf

(note chattr +i will make it unwriteable) you want it writeable by whatever needs to use it. So, use -i in this case.

You can then use your favourite text editor or nano 

 
sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf     - remove all the contents leaving a blank file
control o      -to save
control x      -to exit

Then reboot your computer. When it starts up again, resolv.conf will populate correctly and everything should work.

Following your advice I disabled the NordVPN dns option. On startup I cat'ed the /etc/resolv.conf file repeatedly to see how it was evolving through the automatic boot-up sequence:

Aren't those the same settings you listed in post #4 when your connection was failing 50% of the time? What did you change?

But it looks like your configuration might be correct and you are fighting a "network-online" problem... even though you have set up your service file. I'm wondering if those options really mean what you (and I) think they mean.

As you can see /etc/resolv.conf did not populate itself with the dns servers from NordVPN automatically.
