[Solved] Should I make a new package?

There's a package I use on the AUR "vdhcoapp-bin". It's been outdated since about a month and not being updated. I want to maintain it. Should I send an email to the maintainer to ask him to make me the maintainer? or should I create a new package and send a merge request?
