Pulseaudio auto_switch blocks use of HSP microphone

Having a strange issue with pulseaudio, wondering if anyone else has come across it in the past.
So I have a headset set up through bluez, which works fine. It defaults to A2DP when it auto-connects, I can manually change the profile to HSP/HFP when I want to do a call on Skype or Zoom and this has no problems either, I can change my output and input sinks to the headphones and mic on the headset.
However, where the problem crops up is in

/default/pulse/default.pa

where I have set

load-module module-bluetooth-policy auto_switch-2

to allow me to auto switch audio profile when some program tries to access the microphone. When I try use something which requires the microphone, the audio profile does indeed change, but when it does, it won't let me select the headset microphone as the input device. Everytime I try to change it in pavucontrol for example, it immediately reverts back to the inbuilt laptop microphone. Again, if I change the profile manually before opening Skype, I can then open skype and change around the input and output - I can even change the profile back to A2DP and then back to HFS again. For some reason it only seems to happen when the auto_switch is triggered.

If anyone has any ideas, that;d be great.
Thanks
