I have a system with a P4600 IGD. When I run glmark2 on a local desktop I hit around 2000+. My measure of success is to also get somewhat near this over VNC.
I have tried both KDE Plasma and GNOME DEs, with TurboVNC, with mixed results:
- glmark2 on the local host gives 2000.
- glmark2 over VNC renders via llvmpipe and gives around 400.
- vglrun glmark2 over VNC renders via Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics P4600/P4700 (HSW GT2) and also gives around 400 (maybe even a little less).
- glxspheres64 over VNC renders via llvmpipe and gives around 20fps
- vglrun glxspheres64 over VNC renders via Mesa DRI Intel(R) HD Graphics P4600/P4700 (HSW GT2) and gives around 120fps
So it seems that vglrun works, but only with certain apps, namely glxspheres64, which is provided by VGL.
I've also tried running the DEs themselves over VGL using various uses of vglrun in my xstartup but again with varied luck. Plasma yields a broken desktop, while GNOME still uses llvmpipe by default (although vglrun still works as above).
My questions:
1) Is this normal? Will some GL apps work better than others with a working VGL setup? Should I not expect to get a glmark2 of ~2000 over VNC?
2) Is there a combination of DE and VNC server that works with VGL over VNC on Arch? I don't actually care what I use as long as it's shown to work (and a recipe would be great if so).
