Why can't I switch desktop environment in lightdm?

I originally installed a mate desktop environment onto my vanilla arch installation and enabled lightdm for my login. I tried installed i3 recently and I do not know how to switch from mate to i3. It works if I disable lightdm and run startx, however this is very inconvenient. How do I switch desktop environment in lightdm?

By choosing it from the menu.

The menu icon will be different depending on which greeter you are using.

Oh now I see the logo at the top right of the screen. I was confused because it looks different in gdm. Thanks.
