This one seems to be an Archlinux related problem, because it is specific to the syncthing 1.4.2-1 package.
Here is the thread leading to that conclusion:
https://forum.syncthing.net/t/100-cpu-a … tops/14844
I can't put my finger on the culprit, all I know is the binary version provided by the Syncthing project (used also in the syncthing-bin AUR package) does work well, while the arch package has this strange problem.
So if anyone encounters the same problem, as workaround the AUR package syncthing-bin can be used.
But it would be interesting to find out what causes the problem and I would report it upstream as well.

Thanks for pointing this out. This problem has twice caused my little (fanless) home server to overheat and become unresponsive in the past few days. I'll try with the AUR package.
