Bluetooth headphones without 5 GHz wifi

I've been trying with mixed results to get my Bose QC35 bluetooth headphones on my new install. Using bluetoothctl and blueman I can get it to connect occasionally and even get audio to come through for 10-20 seconds, but it's extremely choppy and I lose the connection eventually. It sounds like the problem described here which makes it sound like switching to 5GHz wifi is almost necessary to fix the issue (which I don't have now). I've tried changing the latency without luck, by

$ pacmd list-sinks | egrep -o 'bluez_card[^>]*'
bluez_card.28_11_A5_76_23_FC
$ set-port-latency-offset 28_11_A5_76_23_FC headset-output 125000
Failure: No such entity
$ set-port-latency-offset bluez_card.28_11_A5_76_23_FC headset-output 125000
Failure: No such entity

Not sure if I'm specifying the card incorrectly or if I'm not catching it for the brief time it's connected correctly, but I'm not sure if that would even help. I've messed a bit with the fragment size as suggested too but I really have no clue what a good value would be.

Is it really necessary to have 5GHz wifi to fix this or is there something else I can try?

Re: Bluetooth headphones without 5 GHz wifi

Check dmesg/journal for bluetooth related error messages, what's your wifi/bluetooth card? Outputs of

lsusb
lspci -k

might be helpful
