pacman reporting alot of orphaned packages

hello guys, i just ran a sudo pacman -Rsn $(sudo pacman -Qdtq) to see if i had any orphaned packages and i am getting a bunch of entries that i do not understand why they are there

pacman is telling you that some of the packages you are removing are optionally required by other installed packages, so you need to determine whether you need the functionality they provide to that package.

the 'warning' part is just telling you that pacman will remove a package after its dependency, 'ruby' will be removed before the packages that depend on it.

and the last part is telling you all the packages that will be removed as they were installed as a dependency of another package which is no longer installed.

EDIT: come to think of it pacman shouldnt be removing optional depends without a double t (-Qttdq) , just tried it and unless i include the second 't' pacman does NOT offer to remove optional depends, someone who knows more than me can possibly explain whats going on.

i am not sure on what to actually do, or even if i have to jsut never run that command

you need to determine whether you need the functionality they provide to that package.

If you don't want the packages, then remove them. Why did you install them in the first place? How did you install them in the first place?

Agreed. We saw this once before recently here. Unfortunately, that user nuked everything before we had time to figure out what was going on.

Invisible Rasta, please post the output of just `pacman -Qdtq`. I suspect the problem is the -s flag for the removal. Those of us who keep tidy systems would never see this, but when there are a lot of orphans, it's much more likely that their dependencies may be optional for other packages.

If this is the case, using that command as-is is probably a bad idea. Instead just `pacman -Qdtq | pacman -Rn` a few times until nothing is removed.

i have jsut notused that every single package i install with pacman -S it is not installed as explicit.. not sure why

Please post actual output.

If you mean you are just using `pacman -S $package` to "reinstall" a package already installed as a dependency, that is not expected to mark it as explicitly installed.
