Installing Xfce (with nvidia)

I've been trying to add Xfce as a new DE to choose from. So far I didnt succeed. I'm running on Gnome right now.

I've tried to follow the instructions from the wiki (well you only need to install two packages and launch it?).

When I try to login after selecting xfce DE, the computer hang a little bit, displays nothing then brings me back to the login screen. I've tried to investigate the reason of this failure. From the Xorg log I see that there's an issue when loading the module for the graphic card. (it's an nvidia). I'm not sure what to do about this. I've tried a few things, mainly using google to navigate among the plethora of obsolete tutorials and half relevant forum posts on the topic. The results has been quite frustrating so I figure that what I really need is a proper method to investigate further.

The nvidia card works fine with cuda/tensorflow. That's essential for me. I don't want to do anything that might risk breaking that. I don't really care about video quality I just want my computing libs to continue using the GPU as it should.

I am asking advice on how to proceed.

Here is the important things:
1. I need to know what are the necessary and sufficient conditions for cuda/tensorflow to continue working fine with the GPU. I need to know what I can and cannot do while guaranteeing that this doesnt change.
2.  There might some configuration file, some options somewhere I can set to make xfce works. I need to find that. (for example there was a forum where somebody modified their xorg.conf, putting in the BusId for the card, I did that but this didn't work).
3. I need to know which module i should install/load/remove.
4. I need to know where to find diagnostic data about what's going wrong.

I can continue googling, but what im really asking is what is the efficient way to find out about the above points?

Re: Installing Xfce (with nvidia)

Post your xorg.log.  If you were running Gnome on xorg, post a log from a functional gnome session as well.  If you've not been running Gnome on xorg, then that's likely the problem: you have to configure Xorg and your video drivers first.

Why is it trying to load "glxserver_nvidia"? Do I really need that? Gnome seems just fine without it. If I install and load this, isn't it going to break my current configuration (I'm using bumblebee)?

Gnome is not using xorg. But there appears to be a xorg.conf file already (which I modified as mentioned in my first message).

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

Re: Installing Xfce (with nvidia)

I have no idea. Maybe because gnome used to work with x at some point in the history of the system.

Using nvidia-xconfig is well known to create broken configs.

I've seen this kind of remarks indeed. This doesnt tell me what to do to improve the configs. I've modified the xorg.conf, following some advice on some forum (this is what I was mentioning above).

Re: Installing Xfce (with nvidia)

EDIT: this was cross posted with the above two post.

charlie wrote:

I'm happy to post my xorg.log but my question is more about, how do I figure this out on my own.

Ah .. what?  So you want us to ignore your post?

To figure this out, you need to check the logs and identify the problem then fix it.  If you can do this yourself, wonderful.  If you want help, though, we'll need the informaiton.

How do you know gnome is fine without it?  And even it if is, so what, if gnome is not running on Xorg, there's going to be a lot of things different.

charlie wrote:

I'm not familiar with hybrid systems or bumblebee, but it seems generally ill advised to use the nvidia-xconfig generated xorg.conf.  Others with the relevant experience can comment on this further.

Re: Installing Xfce (with nvidia)

So you want us to ignore your post?

No please tell me what's wrong if you can.

I say Gnome seems to work fine, because I can use it normally. Maybe in the back something is broken but I dont see it.

And even it if is, so what, if gnome is not running on Xorg, there's going to be a lot of things different

That's the kind of things I wish I could understand/figure out.

Re: Installing Xfce (with nvidia)

I would start by disabling the Xorg.conf.  You mention selecting the desktop environment,  is that from a display manage?  If so which one?
If it is GDM are you certain gnome is not started under Wayland instead of X?
