Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

I've been getting consistent display lock-ups and freezes at least ever few days (sometimes 10 minutes) since upgrading my xps15 9560 last, and I suspect there are issues in xorg and/or kernel issues of late, which I'm using 5.5.9-arch1-2 currently.  This is with kde, cinnamon, or mate - no more than 2 days uptime.

Last time I ssh'd in via another device and xorg was pegging the cpu as my desktop froze, I couldn't restart sddm via systemctl (hangs) and couldn't kill x in any other way, even reboot just disconnected me and remained hung.  Nothing in Xorg logs, journalctl, or other as to an issue, just hung and requires a power button.  I pulled a dmesg and xorg log off it this time, looks like the i915 driver crapping out.

Not sure what else to do other than upgrade and pray, anyone else seeing this currently with igpu?

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

You are on a  outdated kernel, use unsafe i915 (the official "guideline" is don't use any flags unless you are certain you have them because you actually need them) flags and  xf86-video-intel (which shows occasional signs of life but is in  practice not maintained) as well. If you remedy these conditions, update your kernel/system, remove all i915 flags,  and xf86-video-intel., do you still have issues?

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

Interesting on the outdated kernel, I did a full system upgrade just a few weeks ago and that was the kernel it landed with, that's when this all began.  Not sure what it was on prior now, but I'll probably do another system upgrade this weekend.

The boot flags I do have on the kernel were mostly for my xps15 that were recommended at one time or another.  Next time I get a crash, I'll try booting without the extra flags for grins, perhaps they've been resolved in later kernels now.

What intel video driver set *should* be used with a HD 630 igpu?  Looks like upgrading now would feed me a 5.6.6.arch1-1 kernel.

Thanks for the response!

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

The kernel has quite a quick pace, with new major kernels releasing roughly bi-monthly and stable releases happening nearly every week. There's a lot of changes you are missing out on.

Just remove xf86-video-intel and configuration for it if you have them. Xorg will then use the built in modesetting driver, which uses generic OpenGL for acceleration. xf86-video-intel uses chip specific 2D acceleration functionality but that has not been well maintained for newer chips and it's generally not recommended for newer than ~10 year old gpu chips.

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

I've noticed its impossible to stay "current' on arch more than few days or week, but arch upgrades have gotten more and more painful every time I do them with conflicts with recursive/unresolved dependency issues breaking in ugly ways.  I tend to fear them to do more regularly, I still have a bricked desktop from the last arch upgrade on it.

Thank you for that and everything, it's hard to tell what one *should* be using related to the igpu's these days. I gave up on using my nvidia chip in this in hybrid years ago with issues, this was the best I've gotten for stability until lately.  Perhaps with the kernel drivers the prime stuff will work better to try again too.

I will experiment and report back when I can get a few days without work needing done to triage if needed.  Thanks again!

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

Thank you again - I updated, removed the intel graphics, and going to see how it works.  Oddly it hadn't crashed since monday, which is abnormal, so going to give this some time to bake and see if any changes in stability, particularly with hotplug displays.  So far seems a bit more laggy than normal, but if I can get a week or more of uptime, I'm going to consider it a success.

Which *is* a recommended path for hybrid gpu switching support these days with latest kernels?  Prime + intel kms + nvidia proprietary seems to be it, but I am not entirely sure.  I would like to try this again now that I realize I was using the deprecated 915 proprietary driver.

Searching again today at what is currently a recommended solution for intel+nvidia hybrid bring up a half-dozen results at least, some ranging from using the 915 driver (probably where I started with this long ago), using bumblebee, or optimus, or prime, or some combinations/conflict of all/some, and I am still left clueless which is current or recommended.  All the graphics docs, old and new, are rather confusing to sort through then and now, particularly as a new user to arch and having to install everything from scratch, be it a 20yr linux vet (me) or a total noob.

I suppose this is why manjaro has gotten more popular, to take the guesswork out of this.

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

Odd, I followed the nvidia prime guide, installed nvidia and nvidia-prime drivers, and while it booted, I'm getting like 1 frame per 3-6 seconds if I cause any sort of window refresh, with or without kwin under kde (kwin makes it exponentially worse).  I verified it is booting using the nvidia gpu at least, even if performance is ass.  Using nvtop, says it's running with absolutely no load, vulkaninfo reports fine, no high cpu, just... mad lag.

Perhaps not your issue, but question still stands if this *is* the preferred method as I prepare to bark up the nvidia-prime tree.

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

Ever since adding my nvidia gpu, the system has like crept to a crawl in every way, but nothing shows weird other than increased cpu during any, literally *any* activity.  With firefox and one profile (normally I run 5-6), every page link refresh takes now 10-30+ seconds.  KDE menus take seconds to render, even from boot, I could measure the lag from any gui.   Any idea what would cause this?  Seems every cpu-based activity is impacted horribly now.  Even my terminal sessions like nvtop and powertop hang after a bit and stop refreshing in long durations, or ever.  I've restarted them numerously.

Hybrid graphics have always been a devil, but seems someone has made this work.  Maybe it's my huge framebuffer resolution (and crappy drivers)?

I doubt many have tested at this capacity, but I'd really like to track this down, as resolutions grow, and people go mobile, this will become a bigger issue.  I'm probably going to remove the nvidia drivers again, I can't really operate like this, but would love some help to debug this with some help.

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

It would help if you posted new logs and what configuration you did exactly. You've changed the goal post now, and from the sounds of it configured something incorrectly. This works for a whole lot of people and properly. If you want the old offloading method you should not install nvidia-prime and in any case you should definitely uninstall xf86-video-intel for any of these solutions to work properly.

Xorg log and dmesg at the very least

glxinfo -B

to check what exactly is detected and where.

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

Digging around the nvidia-prime issue, I found this recommendation to add to the grub config:

random.trust_cpu=on nvidia-drm.modeset=1

I did so adding that to the rest of my flags for boot, and holy crap, my desktop is more responsive than it ever has been, using the nvidia chipset.  So far everything has been super stellar since adding that, I even threw on some steam games, and was playing postal 2 on it.  Windoze/Proton games weren't working, I'll troubleshoot more.  I did try with nothing but those flags, but my desktop wouldn't even start that way.

This is a huge step forward, now to see how stability is.

Oddly my dock still gives me issues with power-off of monitors in power management of kde, but this is a huge improvement otherwise with desktop fluidity.  I suspect the chinese tb3 dock is wonky now.

KDE is still a giant pain too, still has really weird multi-monitor behavior that borders on random/dysfunctional, need to take that up with them.

Thanks again, and hope some of this discussion helps others.

Sorry, was looking more for general recommendations, and really hard to tell what intel+nvidia+gpu-switching to use across these things at any moment in time.

Here's about how this went down:

1) Removing the intel proprietary driver first using pacman -r xf86-video-intel as recommended, reboot, verified working.
2) Update the system (kernel 5.6.6 now), verified working.
3) Tested Power Management function, still wonky, some additional lag, but working sold in short-term.
4) Decided to test nvidia optimus function now, installed via yay nvidia and nvidia-prime functions.
5) Rebooted, system came up super super slow per fps, every app hung on launch, load, use, reload of browser, anything new changed in windowing.
6) Troubleshoot watching nvtop, htop, powertop, iotop showed nothing other than high core usage across any change, almost like some slow-path introduction.
7) Presuming not intel or nvidia, but the optimus bridge, dug around, found some notes randomly googling to add the "random.trust_cpu=on nvidia-drm.modeset=1" grub kernel flags.
7.1) Not sure on the random.trust_cpu=on flag, said f-it and threw it in anyways for grins.
7.2) Need to test without or validate need for it.
8) Reboot fully, and do a happy dance when my desktop works the best that it ever has with a desktop on it.

So far I get literally no lag what so ever moving windows, full transparency on windows, compositing window dimming under kde, things like that all work fine.  Still watching nvtop, htop, powertop, iotop, and psensor for issues, so far really don't see any.  This is with my xps9560, a caldigit usb-c pro dock from amazon.  I'm thinking less of this tb3 dock by the day, my dell dock didn't do this, but dell built-in cable *did* fall apart/short out...

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

So I can say that this has indeed been stable since doing your recommendations V1del - thanks again for the pointers.  I'll consider this resolve as far as the regular crashing.

KDE Plasma and Kwin  are still rather dysfunctional, but definitely has not crashed since removing the i915 driver, and installing nvidia drivers again.  Odd, kwin shows using my gpu, but gputop show no activity what so ever while my cpu is going berserk on all threads.  Usually I'd see kwin acting up on my gpu on my desktop, so seems something is still a bit broken, but a marked improvement none the less.

Thanks again.

Re: Intel gpu issues on xps15 9560 with 5.5.9 kernel and any DE.

So a follow-up on this, just as it's never ever really quite resolved, but definitely improved with the recommendation from @V1del.

Removing the legacy intel ddx driver helped a lot for general stability.  It doesn't crash randomly 2-8 days now.  Wonderful!

I still get weird anomalies with the graphics compositing no matter what I do.  This is using KDE or Cinnamon I've largely tested.  It works great for a few days, then starts getting worse with hangs and lags over time (~3mo)p.  Just as cinnamon installation docs and kde mention to remove the legacy intel video driver, it otherwise still starts behaving as they describe that the screen will freeze at times, but the mouse can move.  It starts as like a sec or two, but after about ~60 days of time, it grows to be like 10 seconds of hang, which is rather infuriating when trying to work.  Youtube/video in general sucks.  I became a bit used to it as a clinical guinea pig to see how it plays out over time, but I can say this is consistent behavior between kde or cinnamon that their compositors detabilize slowly over time.  Sorry, I like uptime, but with some crazy hardware rigs, I've seen the worst.

I think it's more a hardware level thing (intel gpu), and I've been trying recently to get nvidia prime gpu compositing working for my laptop, or "reverse prime" as they call it.  It just seems to refuse to do so, even though xorg seems to show it's sort of working.  Cinnamon still wants to use my intel based on glxinfo and nvtop showing no gpu usage, but never really sure what is using what.  I presume if my desktop at 11520x2160 would composite against my nvidia, it might not suck, but just can't seem to get it to work despite recommendations I've read over time.  Trying again against arch wiki still yields me nada, I wonder if just the gpu can't deal with it, but the fact it behaves like a memory or resource leak that it gets worse over time tells me more software (or firmware) bug.

Just did a full upgrade as I needed to reboot as I couldn't handle the 10-second hang anymore in my desktop, but would request some opinion how best to approach this.  I appreciate the support in the past and knowledge to understand my problem, perhaps @V1del you might chime in on this.

Trying KDE again too, it seems to render against the intel gpu mostly as well, but we'll see if/when it starts destabilizing in a few days.  I just want compositing to work for more than a few days if even at 11520x2160 resolution.  I rather long for days before compositing (2005-2010-ish) I'd only need to reboot every 6-12mo.
