[SOLVED] nvidia update without having to mkinitcpio?

Every time I do an update (I'm using yay), and it involves the kernel and nvidia, I have to edit grub, change "quiet" to "nomodeset", boot, do "mkinitcpio -p linux", and boot again.  I can almost never remember the "nomodeset" part (though it's starting to become ingrained), so I have to to go another machine to google that.  Today my laptop was unavailable for another reason so I had to google it with one finger on my phone.

Isn't there any way to make this more elegant?

Should I smash my GeForce GTX 640 and buy an AMD card?

1. Stop using yay to do pacman's job

2. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Pacman_hook

Re: [SOLVED] nvidia update without having to mkinitcpio?

So are you advocated completely dropping yay (after a couple years using it) and strictly using pure pacman with the hook you link to?  In which case using something else possibly to handle all the AUR updates?

Or do you mean that when there is an nvidia / kernel update to strictly use pacman just for that case?

I mean use an AUR helper to build and install AUR packages, not to supplant pacman for official repos.
