lightdm with xfce4

I have been trying to install Arch on my machine with lightdm and xfce4 and keep coming up with the same problem.  Everything works except external drives do not show upon the desktop or in the sidebar of windows when I plug them in.  I have tried it on a couple of laptops and always the same result.  If I go through the whole process but install Gnome and use gdm everything works.  This is what I have settled on but it feels clumsy to me to install the whole of Gnome and then just use xfce4 as my desktop.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  I have scoured the web but not come across this problem.  Am I missing something really obvious?
