How to sync gnome apps with pacman

I'm uncertain if this is a question that I should not be asking here. If that's the case I apologize and the topic can, of course, be removed.

I have been using Arch with Gnome for the last month. When I installed it, I chose Gnome as my DE. There are a few Gnome apps that I don't have any interested in using, like Books (gnome-books), so I removed using Pacman, but the app still appears as installed in the Software Center. With that said, I have a few questions (if that's ok):

- What should I use to uninstall gnome apps? The Software Center or Pacman?
- Is there a way to ask the software center to sync with Pacman?
- The button `remove` of the Software Center doesn't seem to be working at all. I'm not sure if this is a bug or something expected that happens

Thanks!

Re: How to sync gnome apps with pacman

Why did you install applications in which you have no interest?
Surely, if you installed them, you know how to remove them?
Why did you install Software Center?
How did you install Arch Linux?

Re: How to sync gnome apps with pacman

If you don't have anything to add, just don't waste your time here.

Why did you install applications in which you have no interest?

I didn't, the apps were installed as part of the gnome package, so I didn't really have a choice smile.

Surely, if you installed them, you know how to remove them?

Of course I know, my question is about the differences of using the Software Center vs Pacman.

Why did you install Software Center?

I'm sure you can figure it out by now.

How did you install Arch Linux?

Like magic...

Does my answers satisfy you?

You definitely have/had a choice. Gnome-shell rings a bell? If Arch is your choice, you should read more.... There are no excuses for being ignorant and rude.

Re: How to sync gnome apps with pacman

Every please keep in mind the code of conduct.

I see why mrbear did not like c00ter's post, and I think he had grounds to reject parts of it.  But mrbear, if you want your thread to go anywhere, try to take the high ground rather than escalate (your second post did more of the latter).

For c00ter and archimboldo, we'd encourage users to follow the wiki, right?  Have either of you looked at the wiki page for gnome?  It instructs users to install the 'gnome' group which does include a large number of packages.  Certainly mrbear could have opted out of any of these at that time, but frankly faulting him for following this community's advice provided in the wiki is just absurd.

@mrbear, sorry I have no experience with gnome, but have you followed this?  Do you have packagekit installed (and configured)?

Re: How to sync gnome apps with pacman

Thank you Trilby, I could not have said it better.  And, graysky, IIRC, the Software Center, which is an integral part of the Gnome environment, calls them apps.

I just moved back to i3 after using Gnome for a month and no longer have Gnome installed, so I cannot check.  I thought that, if I removed a package using pacman, it no longer appeared in the Gnome menus.
The software center may only being installing and uninstalling stuff for the local user.  pacman will install it for use by all users.

Very diplomatic, I trust everyone is “appy now”

Sorry.
Op I’m going against all that is sane by guessing here but maybe if the pkg is still present in Pac-Man s cache the SC will continue to show it ? Maybe a leftover .desktop file ?

pacman doesn't leave leftover anything, .desktop files or otherwise, unless the file is explicitly marked in pacman as a configuration file which needs to be backed up.

(There will be public hangings for anyone caught listing desktop files in /usr/share/applications/ as "backup" files. tongue Hopefully it won't get to that point. big_smile)

Re: How to sync gnome apps with pacman

I love the smell of gunpowder in the morning!
At the risk of violating the Arch forum hospitality laws, I'll attempt to provide at least a partial answer to @mrbear's questions.

One of the first things I always do after installing Gnome on Arch is

$ sudo pacman -Rns gnome-software

On the other hand, gnome-software can be useful for "shopping" for new stuff. I would probably still be inclined to install using pacman or yay.

Just my $0.02 worth. And never forget the official Arch motto: "RTFM, you worthless noob!"

Re: How to sync gnome apps with pacman

I think mrbear wanted to be able to manage packages with the gnome software gui.

This is answered in this post : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=269994

You have to install the following package : https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … it-plugin/

"pacman -S gnome-software-packagekit-plugin"

Then you will be able to browse programs and install them and remove them through the GUI.

The wiki advises caution when using packagekit, see : https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman … #Graphical

zenbum's answer "sudo pacman -Rns gnome-software" will *remove* gnome software

I know this post is outdated, but it shows up on internet results and felt not fully answered
