No audio output if speakers are connected before boot.

So initially, if the speaker jack is plugged in before I boot my laptop, even after setting maxvolume, there's no audio output. I have to disconnect and plug the jack back in for the speakers to work. or just disconnect it if I want the laptop's speakers to be used. Is there some option which will make pulseaudio or alsa try to discover plugged audio devices right after boot? I'd obviously not prefer having to disconnect and plug the jacks back in every time I boot my device.
