Kernel won't boot without 'nomodeset'

Hello, I am new to Arch and just installed the distro (not using a live boot). Since installation, I have not been able to boot without passing the kernel parameter 'nomodeset' to disable KMS. By not booting, I mean it will have a 'no signal' display after getting past GRUB. This is fine except that my GPU needs the open source driver amdgpu, which requires KMS (not passing in nomodeset). So I am forced to figure out why I need to pass in nomodeset in the first place and resolve the issue.

My system:
- [AMD/ATI] Tonga PRO [Radeon R9 285/380] (rev f1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
- Xorg display server
- GNU GRUB bootloader
- GNOME window manager
- VGA display
- BIOS firmware

What I have tried so far:
- Passing 'amdgpu.dc=0' as a kernel parameter, without nomodeset. This results in the kernel actually making it to login after about 10 minutes of black screen, but the entire display will be very blurry and unreadable.
- Updating to latest 'linux-firmware' package.
- Passing 'video=SVIDEO-1:d' as kernel parameter, without nomodeset. Nothing changed.

Journal output from without any additional kernel parameters:

Re: Kernel won't boot without 'nomodeset'

Please post the kernel messages from a boot without nomodeset or amdgpu.dc=0.  You can obtain it from the journal,  combine filter by boot with only kernel ring buffer messages.
See the tip box from pastebin to redirect the output directly to a pastebin.  The journal output you posted was wrapping at 88 characters producing output such as

May 08 18:48:32 javen-arch kernel: Chip Version Info: CHIP_8188E_Normal_Chip_TSMC_D_CUT
_1T1R_RomVer(0)

The dmesg output was incomplete.  dmesg output is contained in the journal so there is no need to post both.

Re: Kernel won't boot without 'nomodeset'

Yes the journal output I posted neither had nomodeset nor amdgpu.dc=0 as kernel parameters.

Re: Kernel won't boot without 'nomodeset'

If the journal is complete (sth. I'm not convinced of due to the wrapping, please utilize the tip from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pastebin ) you don't even make it to the multi-user.target

a) Try to boot the multi-user.target, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … _boot_into
b) Try passing "random.trust_cpu=on" to the kernel (because of the amd/crng error) - alternatively (if cpuinfo doesn't announce RDRAND) see https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Rng-tools

Not easy to spot, but these seem relevant

Please verify if you have microcode updating configured.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

The journal should be complete, I copied directly from the 'jounalctl -b' command, then verified nothing was cut out when pasting to this post. I can still fix the formatting though.

I tried running both of the kernel parameters you suggested separately and together, but it didn't resolve the issue. Though, it did seem to make it farther in the boot process than before. I can post the journal for this boot if needed.

How would I determine if cpuinfo announces RDRAND?

Re: Kernel won't boot without 'nomodeset'

grep -i rd /proc/cpuinfo

Post a much journal as you get and also comment on/test the microcode situation.

What is "cjounal"??

Here is the output of the journal with both suggested parameters passed, 'random.trust_cpu=on systemd.unit=multi-user.target'

It doesn't appear that cpuinfo is announcing RDRAND, so I will look into the rng-tools tip you suggested.

As for the microcode suggestion, I am in the process of trying to set up 'early loading' microcode updates.

(I meant to say 'journalctl -b' instead of 'cjournal')

I set GRUB to do early microcode updates but still, the boot process is only getting to 'running GNOME display'.

Re: Kernel won't boot without 'nomodeset'

The latter journals don't show  that crng was initialized, so look at the rng-tools (or haveged)
