I have the Logitech C920 USB webcam (HD Pro, a popular model).
Everything works fine in Windows but on my fully-updated Arch Linux desktop, the audio comes out as just screeching noise for the other party.
I've tried playing around with pavucontrol, but as near as I can tell, there is no driver for Linux, and v4s-utils apparently only allows video tweaking, I'm out of ideas.
I really really don't want to have to use Windows for my various quarantine webcam needs, especially since at some point I'll need to share my desktop, and only my Linux desktop will be relevant.
Can anybody think of anything else I can try for debugging?

Rule out Zoom as the problem. Record some audio with the mic.

The problem exists in both Zoom and Google Meet (and both work fine in Windows 7).
I recorded the webcam into audacity and found that the static is so bad that you can barely/almost make out my voice.

For this Arch desktop, I send all output to my UCA-202 USB card, which runs to my stereo.
So I don't care anything about any built-in audio, nor any HDMI audio, etc.
I may use the UCA-202 one day to record some old cassettes to the computer, as I have in the past, but for now, the only microphone I want to use is my webcam microphone.

There is a way to streamline some of this go into the configuration section of pavucontrol and set the profiles of the cards you don't need to "Off".
For the recording with the webcam, does opening audacity with
PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=60 audacity #or $browser or zoomhelp?

Sadly, no change. FWIW I did make the pavucontrol configuration changes ("Off").
Then just now, I found the old cheap webcam I bought forever ago, and the audio recording on it works fine. lsusb identifies it as: Bus 010 Device 003: ID 093a:2620 Pixart Imaging, Inc.
Again though, I can't see how there could be a problem with the mic on the newer webcam as it works fine in Windows 7.

amixer -c4? Some other things you can try is switching the profile of the webcam to digital/SPDIF/IEC in the configuration (though I'd suspect the mic to not work at all if I'm interpreting the advertised functionality correctly) and try muting one of the stereo channels (it could be that this is being mixed/advertised incorrectly)
You could also probe for a kernel regression by testing linux LTS or so, but I'd feel that to be a bit far fetched right now.

I finally did get things working so I'll be marking this solved.
Unfortunately I'm not completely sure what exactly finally worked.
In the pulse trouble-shooting wiki, I went through and it actually told me to set default-sample-rate to the value I got and it was 32000, which doesn't make any sense to me and I hope I can change it back.
I did various reinstalls of pulse, alsa, etc.
I have a ridiculous amount of USB peripherals and I was running a powered KVM switch plus 3 unpowered 4-port USB hubs.
I can't be sure then but the very last thing I did was just to remove one of the USB hubs (I had been trying to drive 3 external hard drives off an unpowered 4-port hub, was working, but flaky), and make a few other adjustments to what USB device is plugged in where. I will likely be purchasing some powered USB hub to replace the 2 (or 3) unpowered hubs, but for now things are working, and I just got through an important 45-minute Google Meet.
I hope I haven't wasted too much of peoples' times for what possibly was related to USB ports somehow.
