I ran into this same issue with the regular kernel, which initially prompted me to switch to LTS, which at the time was 5.4.38. The 5.4.38 runs fine, but when I update to 5.4.39 or 5.4.40 and reboot, my system appears to not properly load the kernel. I have no internet connection (neither wifi nor ethernet), and when I try to login on a user account, xorg breaks and spits out an error with my graphics card (module not found for i915). I am still able to login as root and downgrade.
I am new, so I apologize for doing an awful job of presenting this. I am more than happy to link/embed whatever logs you all believe would be helpful. Perhaps the issue isn't actually with the kernel and rather I may not be maintaining my bootloader correctly? I use EFISTUB. Is there something in particular I need to maintain with EFISTUB whenever I update my kernel?
