[SOLVED] Cinnamon/Xorg freeze frequently for unknown reason

The desktop environment I'm using is Cinnamon. I do not use any login manager and always start the desktop environment by ``startx'' after log in.

$ uname -a
Linux 5.4.32-1-lts #1 SMP Mon, 13 Apr 2020 12:21:10 +0000 x86_64 GNU/Linux

It happens that my screen often freezes for unknown reasons. The freeze sometimes happens when I type something, or when I am simply browsing a web page with Firefox. Every time this happens, I have to switch another tty, pkill x and startx again. This is very annoying and even ruined my unsaved work a few times. What I found is that it seems only the graphics are frozen: If there a program or webpage playing audio, it will keep playing. And sometimes, the mouse pointer can still react and change its shape accordingly. Say if there is a text input field on the screen at the moment it freezes, the pointer still changes to the I-beam when I move it there. Though I am not 100% sure if the graphic interface still responds to my operation despite the display freezes.

Below are some logs right after one such freeze happens. I did found very useful information by googling parts of them.

I'm quite sure the part from

AIGLX: Suspending AIGLX clients for VT switch

to

This driver cannot change properties on a disabled device

appears every time when the freeze happens. I'm not very sure about other parts of the log.

Please let me know if you need any other information to make a diagnosis. Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] Cinnamon/Xorg freeze frequently for unknown reason

I'm quite sure the part from

… happens because you switch to a different VT, this is *after* the freeze and because of the way you deal with it.

A complete system journal might shed more light but I'd suspect that the issue is w/ muffin, ie. the  cinnamon windowmanager/compositor. I'm unaware whether that's possible, but you should disable compositing if it is.
Another test would be to remove xf86-video-intel and fall back to the modesetting driver.

Could you please let me know which log files should I probably look more carefully? There are too many under /var/log... Maybe some are even hiding elsewhere? Thanks!

I remembered once there was a control of the compositor on the same page as adjusting window effects. However, it is not there now, at least at the current version. I have disabled all effects and turned on the option ``disable compositing for full-screen windows" in the general setting. I have also removed the xf86-video-intel package. Let's see if the problem still arises. Sorry that I can't try to reproduce it right away as the problem happens without a noticeable cause.

About 2 weeks have been passed and the problem never occurs again. It's probably solved by these operations. Thank you @seth for pointing the way for me!
