default application changed by installation of new software induce

Hi,

I've recently had a modification of default app. I think it may have occurred after installing a new application (or after update). For example, default app for txt was leafpad and it became diffuse.
Is there a way to avoid this?
Is there a simple and good front-end that help setting configuration of default applications?

Documentation on default app is very deficient for a non specialist on that subject and no front-end is shown on default application webpage.

OK, thank you. I can see that lsdesktopf allows to get all types of handled files (but with some quite strange output) and the app selectdefaultapplication can be helfull to set defult app whereas the usability of this app is not very good because it is only structures on app and not mime types, if I not missing somthing. It could have two different options.
