I have just done a new Arch base install, then pacman -Syu then installed KDE. I have also installed hwd and have that in my Daemons in rc.conf.
Everything is working fine except for Alsa (installed alsa-utils, alsa-lib, alsa-oss).
Alsaconf detects my card fine (emu10k1 chipset), but also detects the Realtek VT827 which is my onboard sound and is currently disabled in the BIOS.
After running alsaconf and selecting SB Live (emu10k1) as my card, alsamixer then displays the settings for Realtek VT827- not the SB Live.
It is strange, alsamixer defaults to the Realtek sound settings every time.
When I ran alsaconf for the first time, I let it add the entries to modprobe.conf. I have since deleted them, but it makes no difference.
I can modprobe snd-emu10k1, so the kernel module seems to load OK.
Slackware 10.2 & Zenwalk also detect the disabled Realtek VT827, but both have no probs with Alsa & alsamixer. I think this is a configuration issue of some sort, as it has never been a problem with any distro I have tried.
Any ideas?

Add the module for the onboard sound card in the MOD_BLACKLIST array of rc.conf and it won't be loaded. It might solve the sound problem.
Remove hwd from the DAEMONS of rc.conf. It is not needed anymore and could interfere with udev. Running alsaconf also interferes with udev.

Thanks, will give it a try tonight.

That seemed to work. I used amixer to set the PCM and Master volumes. Sound quality is a bit poor, but I have sound.
Thanks again
