How do i make the first menu entry in GRUB point to a certain kernel?

As far as i can tell the first entry of the GRUB menu above advanced just picks a random kernel, and there should be a way to set grub-mkconfig to pick any kernel I like when it's run.

This page describes having grub memorize a certain entry you designate as "default", but doesn't allow you to change which is the first kernel chosen for the top entry.

Is there any way to set this without manually editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg?

Any time I run grub-mkconfig, i'll just end up with the same thing and have to edit grub.cfg again. It's a small chore, but I could also just uninstall kernels until grub-mkconfig happens to pick the one I'm looking for.

To lessen the chore keep a back up of the drop in *grub.cfg. The UUIDs are unlikely to change unless you repartition:reformat the HDD(s)
I’m quite confident our fine wiki has the answer regarding having grub choose your defined ‘default’ kernel.  Or simply edit the cfg to put whatever kernel and parameters to show first in its menu
