im trying to compile and use 2.6.2, but i keep running into this problem:
warning: unable to open an initial console
then the computer reboots after about 3 seconds.
i have googled and read solutions like adding Unix98 PTY Support + /dev/pts support. that does not work. tried adding these 2 lines into fstab seperately:
pts /dev/pts devpts gid=4.mode=620 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
nothing has worked. also tried to recompile the kernel over and over again. any ideas?
from the main menu in the kernel config, -> file systems -> pseudo file systems -> /dev file system support (Obsolete). Enable that, then another 2 options will be shown below it, enable "Automatically mount at boot"

It has been stripped down to a bare minimum and is only provided for
legacy installations that use its naming scheme which is
unfortunately different from the names normal Linux installations
use.
not sure where this will leave arch in the future.

like many comment in the kernel i would not worry about this yet as udev is hardly considered stable yet even by the developers. i am sure that the arch developers are working on moving arch over to udev.
i expect that it will be a long time before udev is the standard acroos the miriad of distros out there.
