VM on USB device freezing

I am running an arch linux vm on vmware and the virtual disk is on a usb device. The vm is constantly freezing and a can't install arch linux on the vm. I have given it 1024 mb of ram.

I am getting BUG softlockup CPU #0 stuck for 38 seconds!
