Hi
I use fully updated Arch + Plasma.
I can't start KDE Plasma running kernel 5.7.2, downgrading to 5.6.15 made login to work again.
Edited:
Sorry, here is more information about the problem: After I enter my password in login manager (SDDM),
I only see a black screen with cursor during ~2 minutes, then my system goes back to login screen.
When I open the dropdown to select a user session, sddm-greeter crashes.
Here is the output of journalctl -b after login failure.

Any idea how to solve the problem with kernel 5.7.2?

What is the contents of Xorg.log from the SDDM failure?

I have this same problem. It is a i915 GPU error, at least for me. Unable to upgrade beyond kernel 5.6.15.

Here is the specific issue with GPU i915 HANG, marked as "severity: critical":

The issue is not reproducible with linux-lts-5.4.46 and not reproducible with linux-5.6.15.
It appears it's something about linux-5.7.x that is not compatible with i915.

Issue still open as of kernel 5.7.4.arch1-1 released today.
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/2024
Unable to upgrade beyond kernel 5.6.15.
dmesg for this issue looks something like this:
[ 31.688186] i915 0000:00:02.0: GPU HANG: ecode 8:1:85dffff9, in Xorg [565]
[ 31.688198] GPU hangs can indicate a bug anywhere in the entire gfx stack, including userspace.
[ 31.688203] Please file a _new_ bug report at https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/issues/new.
[ 31.688208] Please see https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/wikis/How-to-file-i915-bugs for details.
[ 31.688212] drm/i915 developers can then reassign to the right component if it's not a kernel issue.
[ 31.688217] The GPU crash dump is required to analyze GPU hangs, so please always attach it.
[ 31.688222] GPU crash dump saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error
[ 31.789462] i915 0000:00:02.0: Resetting rcs0 for stopped heartbeat on rcs0
[ 31.789508] i915 0000:00:02.0: Xorg[565] context reset due to GPU hang
Depending on the setup, the HANG may occur at different points in sddm or sddm-greeter. When I tested, no crash dump was saved to /sys/class/drm/card0/error. The HANG prevents the ability to open a console.

zpg443 have you tried drm-tip with and without the change from https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/inte … ote_530965?

Not really comfortable with patching the kernel, so no I have not.
Offline
There is a package for drm-tip https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-drm-tip-git/
It currently will not compile due to the various trees that are pulled together not being in sync. https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1156
Unless you need the admgpu driver you can just disable it.
Amend the PKGBUILD's prepare function so it ends
echo "Setting config..."
cp ../config .config
scripts/config --disable CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU
make olddefconfig
make -s kernelrelease > version
echo "Prepared $pkgbase version $(<version)"
}
See Makepkg#Parallel_compilation to reduce build times.
If the built package does not work. After edtting src/linux-drm-tip-git/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/gt/intel_ring_submission.c use makepkg with the -e and -f options to use the modified src and overwrite the existing packages.

It may be easier to keep lts kernel installed (pacman -S linux-lts) and move on with life till i915 issues are fully resolved.

There is no evidence that i915 issues with kernel 5.7.x are resolved upstream. Ref: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/2024, it may be easier to keep lts kernel installed (pacman -S linux-lts) and move on with life till i915 issues are fully resolved.
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/inte … ote_532379 is evidence the cause has been located and a work around provided.

@loqs, thanks for pointing out. I edited my comment, hoping it works.

pk.gmp, that is good advice...followed it.
Looks like this issue has been an ongoing one for some time:
