Nvidia Excessively high CPU usage running games or graphical apps

Until the last 3-4 months (from what I can remember) things were behaving normally. However at some point (I believe after an update) I began seeing abnormally high CPU usage running any applications that are graphical in nature (especially games, but it also occurs in web browsers). In many cases it can be as high as 100% on all cores. Interestingly, this does not occur for programs running via wine or proton, only native Linux applications which makes me suspect it is not my drivers themselves, but rather an issue with some graphics library on my system.

My computer is a laptop with a mobile "Nvidia GTX 1050 ti" that I have running with the propitiatory drivers (currently version 440.82-21) which I setup as described in the "NVIDIA Optimus" page on the wiki over a year ago with no issues until now. I am running XOrg (not wayland) with XFCE as my desktop environment.
