Integrated webcam on Samsung laptop isn't working

Hi,

I'm trying to get the integrated webcam on my Samsung laptop to function, but so far nothing has worked. The laptop is a Series 7 Ultra from around 2014.

I first followed the instructions of the wiki, but got stuck when I found out that /dev/video0 didn't exist on my system.

The uvcvideo kernel module wasn't loaded by default, so I tried loading it using modprobe, but nothing has changed. Here is the output of dmesg related to it:

799:[ 1968.263173] videodev: Linux video capture interface: v2.00
800:[ 1968.289307] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo
801-[ 1968.289309] USB Video Class driver (1.1.1)

I also tried loading uvcvideo during boot using systemd, but no result either.

It doesn't seem like the webcam device is detected at all. The wiki mentions the gspca driver module, but I haven't found any clear info on it. How can install it to try it out?

Also, if the webcam needs another external driver, how can I find out which? The output of lsusb doesn't seem very helpful:

Bus 003 Device 003: ID 8087:07da Intel Corp.
Bus 003 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 045e:0822 Microsoft Corp. USB Precision Mouse
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0bda:0129 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTS5129 Card Reader Controller
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

I have no idea how to proceed from here, so any hint is greatly appreciated!

Check whether it's disabled in your BIOS/UEFI it doesn't really look like there's any webcam in any capacity (lsusb should show something even if it wasn't explicitly supported) detected by the system.

I did think about that, but there's no related option in the UEFI boot menu. Just to be safe I reset everything to the defaults, but nothing changed.

According to some info I found on the wiki, the camera should work out of the box with uvcvideo. So the only two options I can think of is that there's a hardware switch I missed (but I don't see anything on the keyboard or anywhere else) or that it's simply broken.

Wild guess here, but if the laptop is bought second hand, perhaps the previous owner has physically unplugged the webcam from the motherboard.
