dell port replicator

An odd issue.
The dell port replicator audio port doesn't seem to work.
It is supposed to behave like a headphone jack, but I can't get it working.

I see the following behavior exhibited:

a) When the laptop is undocked, the system audio works fine (built in speakers).
b) When the laptop is undocked, and you plug speakers into the headphone jack on the laptop, the system audio turns off, and only the speakers in the headphone jack work.

c) When the laptop is docked, the system audio works fine.
d) When the laptop is docked, and you plug speakers into the headphone jack on the laptop, the system audio turns off, and only the speakers in the headphone jack work.
e) When the laptop is docked, and you plug speakers into the headphone jack on the port replicator, the system audio turns off, but the speakers in the port replicator's headphone jack do not work. No sound comes out.

Very odd. a-d are correct behavior. e is incorrect behavior. It is supposed to behave similar to b and d, but it does not.

I did some google searching, and it seems to be a very common problem, but I haven't found a solution yet.

Anyone with a dell laptop and a port replicator have this working?

Dell port replicators have their own sound device, so you actually have 2 sound cards when docked, the internal one in the laptop AND the card in the port replicator.

Default the output for the port replicator headphone jacket is muted, so you'll have to unmute it.
Identifying the correct channel to unmute is the tricky part.

I'm having the exact same issue as the OP, I know this is several years later but has anyone found a solution for this? I have a Dell Latitude E6410 and my problem is the exact same one as above. All the correct features (a-d) work as above but the final feature (e) does not work.

EDIT: After removing and and replugging the speakers to the dock audio jack it has begun to work, but it will not work immediately on start up. Any ideas?
