Hello,
I have to admit that I am completely unrelated to sound management in Linux.
Recently, I decided to try i3. On my first attempt, I installed on top of kde so I had an out-of-the-box experience.
Then, I did a fresh install, and audio is something that I am a dumb for real.
I use headphones plugged in an external usb, so after research I installed pavucontrol in order to switch from headphones to speakers and vice versa. ALso, I set "Element Front" switch to off in /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer-paths/analog-output-headphones.conf, so to don't have sound both from speakers and headphones simultaneously.
Now, my main problem is that my keybinds to increase/decrease/mute volume aren't work.
I tried pactl, pulseaudio-ctl, amixer but no success at all. The only keys that work are the ones about multimedia: play/stop/prev/next and there is only a visual Increase/decrease on polybar volume indicator.

If you use '@DEFAULT_SINK@' option try to define it in ~/.config/pulse/default.pa similar like I did:
I just ran 'pacmd' then chose an output source that needed me.

The solution was so simple, but the op is a dumb. ![]()
I hadn't checked the sound from my headphones, so this morning I discovered that usb sound card (headphones) was the default sink.
pacmd set-default-sink and done.
