[SOLVED] Unable to log in as a new user ?Permission issues

Hi,

For the first time I have managed to install Arch in the UEFI mode following wiki. Everything works perfectly fine apart... being unable to log in with my daughter's credentials. I set her a new account and every time I try to log to her account, I can't.

Journalctl:

fresh copy of .xinitrc present in the folder.

Every help appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to log in as a new user ?Permission issues

How did you create the home directory so it is owned by ad4ms:home instead of justyna root:users?

drwxr-xr-x  5 ad4ms3  home       4096 Jun 29 23:02 .

Edit:
The ls is for

ls -ls /home

Edit2:
What is the home group used for and why are ad4ms and justyna not members of it but /home is set to use that for group membership?
Edit3:
How did you create the user justnya?  What is the output of the following?

getent passwd justnya

justnya is not the same as Justnya on case sensitive filesystems.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to log in as a new user ?Permission issues

I locked myself in sudoers and used arch-chroot to edit it. Meanwhile, I thought, while being logged in there, I would create the account for her.. I followed the wiki with this as well... but looks like not so well... My plan was, that she would have an access to some simple web browser so she can do her school work during lockdown and not waste time on internet. She will not have permissions to use sudo, nor mess with my /dev/sda4 (home partition for everyone) but only her own home folder. So, this was a story of 'home' group.

[ad4ms3@archlinux ~]$ ls -ls /home
total 15172
    4 drwxr-x--- 8 root   users      4096 Jun 29 23:47 Justyna
    0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root   root         13 Jun 30 07:10 Jusyna -> /home/Justyna

The other files are journalctl.txt and lost+found folder

[ad4ms3@archlinux ~]$ getent passwd justyna
justyna:x:1001:1003::/home/Jusyna:/bin/bash

There is name misspelled, but I have already changed path home folder last night, and made sure that /bin/bash is correct. The output usermod -s /bin/bash justyna says 'no changes' I dont know does it still shows /home/Jusyna:/bin/bash..

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to log in as a new user ?Permission issues

The home folder in question is named inconsistently. Sometimes with a capital, sometimes with a lower case J. Sometimes with and without a T. Home folders should also not be symlinks.
Decide on a single folder name and rename it and the passwd entry accordingly.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to log in as a new user ?Permission issues

Because you only changed the shell.
You want "usermod -dm …"

The $HOME permissions are off, only root has full access and if "justyna" isn't in the "users" group, she can't even enter it.
chown it to "justyna:users" and probably withdraw the group permissions.

Re: [SOLVED] Unable to log in as a new user ?Permission issues

So, finally, it works. I chown it to justyna:users, sorted as above and it all works... now I must sort permissions for firefox, and other things... And that is why I rather have Arch, it does what you tell it to do... smile
