TTY not showing any output on first login [SOLVED]

Hi guys,

i recently updated my system for the first time in months (linux, linux-headers and nvidia were updated for example), which lead to a problem with my login. Any tty i switch to doesn't display anything. I just get a blank screen and don't have any kind of output.
However: i can still log in by just typing in my username and password blindly. I don't use any kind of login manager.

And here is the twist: after logging in like that, i can work on my system without any issues. I can even switch to the other tty's and get the normal getty output there as if nothing was wrong all along. I can even close i3 completely and log back in on the same TTY, which then displays everything correctly compared to the first login after a fresh start.

Needless to say that this is annoying, since i can't see when i'm ready to log in or input my pw, leading to many failed login attempts where i for example enter the pw as user or vice versa.

Any idea where to start?

Posting your pacman.log from this grand upgrade would be a start.
Have you tried taking a look at your journal after booting?

Indeed i also looked at the journalctl, but i couldn't find any bigger issues. Some errors with docker for example, but nothing that would ring the alarm bells (at least my bells ...). The only thing that i found until now (from several resources) was that it could have something to do with getty. But why should it magically work on second login then?

To ensure you get a TTY it's often useful to use the

nvidia-drm.modeset=1

parameter to make the nvidia driver use the modesetting interface to render the console. I'd find it weird that this only occured now though.

And maybe something else of relevance: i discovered that i get some crazy additional output on the tty that i log in (after i log out again and watch the output).  so i decided to grep that output "sudo cat /dev/vcs1". I have no idea where this comes from. I cleared my /etc/issue (and just wrote "test" into it), so that is why there is a " 'test' lukarch login: NadVic17" somewhere in there ... I'm however not sure if this kind of output is directly related to the login issue, since i had problems earlier with that before as well, which i thought came from a faulty /etc/issue, but since changing that didn't make a difference, i thought i'd include it here as well.

Does this help? And where would any unmatched characters come from in this instant?

I'll try the nvidia-drm-modeset right now, gimme a sec.
I wouldn't find that too weird, since i basically didn't come to use the linux side of my dual boot until recently again, and beforehand i had a gpu-passthrough setup with a different kernel setup, specific drivers and all that stuff that i had to shut down due to "too high input lag" (those few milliseconds were too much for me and the competitive gaming side from me, sadly). But yeah, this really shouldn't be the first time something got rebuilt, hooked or mkinitcpio ran. It worked fine for a few weeks after removing the passthrough.

This worked! Thank you very much! I double checked even to make sure that the problem actually got resolved through this and not through the usage of grub-mkconfig alone (or mkinitcpio). Now, even my dmesg output even stays where it should be and doesn't get deleted anymore (which also was the case before, but didn't bug me much since i didn't know this was even possible).

However: why does it work? From my knowledge, i'd suspect that the nvidia drivers were loaded just after login, which made me not able to see the output beforehand (which somehow got introduced as quiet feature through the update). And logging out afterwards didn't unload them again, which made me able to see the output at second login on tty.
And now with this change, which perfectly complements my initramfs-modules that i added during the gpu-passthrough setup (i guess i must have removed the modeset while undoing the passthrough and forgot about the modules), the nvidia drivers get loaded as early as possible again and so i can see an output. Is that about it?

Under the guise of passthrough experiments it does make sense that this only occured now, as I'd assume to passthrough you utilized an internal intel card or so which has an integrated kernel driver that uses modesetting anyway.

I also haven't dived into it in depth on what exactly it is doing, but what I'm assuming to be happening is that the driver listens to/observes a different interface/kernel API for when it should activate (as in it is loaded before log in, but it doesn't receive the information from the kernel that there should be a console to display) when you load xorg and thus the xorg nvidia driver that will do the proper modeset changes so the output gets activated and stays that way on TTY switches) by using that parameter you tell the driver to explicitly use the modesetting API and hence it also gets the information that there's a console to display from the kernel.

There seem to be issues with SLI which I've seen mentioned as one of the main reasons for why that option is not enabled by default.

Yeah, i think that makes sense.

The passthrough experiments were done a few months ago, and i did use my arch installation in the meantime, even though it wasn't for too long. Still, it has to do something with this recent update, since i definitely updated the kernel and everything else beforehand and didn't run into any issues until this recent update. For the sake of the passthrough i even purchased another GPU, so i had an internal GPU from my i7 processor (which i didn't use), the extra GPU for linux (which i purchased to have different outputs available, which isn't the case for my onboard graphics), and my main GPU (which i then passed through). However, the GPU i used for passthrough wasn't exactly the best, it cost like 50 bucks and was barely capable of handling my simple screen outputs on linux. And i had to install additional drivers from AMD as well, which i had removed after the experiment was over. However, even though i did use my linux after ending my passthrough experiments, i didn't really do much or updated anything bigger since i removed the additional GPU itself. Maybe the integrated kernel drivers were able to show my TTY, but not able to handle anything further, which is why i had to install the drivers back then, and which is why i was running into issues now that i removed the card AND ran the update.

Short update:
I just checked the dates, and it doesn't add up. I removed the card and ran updates (of linux and nvidia -> mkinitcpio ran for sure, probably even grub-mkconfig) afterwards, and didn't have any problems through that, even though i didn't change the setup at all throughout the last few updates and only recently got those problems through their last update.
