I installed i3 with i3-gaps and started it with startx, but I'm experiencing graphical glitches and none of the hotkeys are working. I've tried using both alt and super, but nothing happens. There is a single window that can be moved and resized, and pressing esc closes it, but nothing else can be done.

It looks like you miss fonts, i3 is just sets of packages it needs to be configured by user.
