GNOME save / save as / open dialogs take a lot of time

Hi all,

since a few weeks, the GNOME save and open dialogs take a lot of time to respond (kind of freezing). After a few seconds I can continue.
I solved this by simply avoiding the dialogs, opening files directly in e.g. vim, where the problem does not exist. So, I am sure it's a GNOME issue. I was hoping it will be fixed in one of the next updates, but it was not. So, here I am... I just did an upgrade and rebooted. Problem persists.

It get's worse when trying to work with tools that edit multiple files at a time, e.g. ID3 tag editors like EasyTAG.

I've looked up similar issues. Most point to problems with icon themes, e.g. https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64558. So I disabled the Papirus theme I am using, falling back to Adwaita. But it didn't change anything. Also, most of these reports are more than 10 years old. hmm

I am using a pretty basic Arch set up with no graphical customizations apart from the Icon theme.

GNOME 3.36.4
Files 3.36.3-efc97f8a9

Does anyone have an idea what I should look into?
Thanks in advance.
