Difficulty recognizing inputs on MIDI controller

I have an MPK49 MIDI controller, and have been following the guide here to get it set up. All the proper modules are loaded, and aconnect -i gives

client 14: 'Midi Through' [type=kernel]
    0 'Midi Through Port-0'
client 28: 'Akai MPK49' [type=kernel,card=3]
    0 'Akai MPK49 MIDI 1'
    1 'Akai MPK49 MIDI 2'
    2 'Akai MPK49 MIDI 3'

If I run aseqdump -p 28 and press buttons on the controller, nothing happens. Here's the catch though - the problem is easily fixed by unplugging my controller and plugging it back in. Once I do this, everything works fine. If I boot into Arch with the controller already connected, nothing will happen unless I unplug the controller and plug it back in. Does anyone have any idea as to why this is the case? I restart my computer frequently, so it's a bit silly to always have to do this, especially since (presumably) this shouldn't be happening.
