Whenever I use packman to download a package or try to update, it freezes at :: Retrieving packages from current... or when updating it freezes t ::Sycnchonizing package databases...
Is it because maby I have FTP blocked? And is there a way to use http?

There's a commented out line in pacman.conf that tells pacman to use wget in passive mode to transfer the files. You should check that out. That's the only way I've been able to get Shadowhand's repos to work.

Ok, thanks. I jsut tried that, but it still gets stuck at the part where it connects to the ftp server. I'll have to get my dad to unblock ftp ports.

Unblocking ftp ports should not be necessary as pacman uses an outgoing ftp connection and those are rarely blocked on home networks.
Maybe your network card isn't detected correctly.

My dad is a security freak..so I wouldn't be surprised if he did block it. He is a Microsoft guy...so everything has to be locked down for it to be secure. It worked until he put the router filters for my laptop on.

Mirrors in the wiki is an uptodate list of mirrors, and there are some http mirrors on it.
Unfortunately the best/fastest mirrors on the list are usually ftp. Maybe your dad is willing to setit up so that connections from your laptop to 2 or 3 ftp mirrors close to you are enabled.
