Splitting the monitor

This is a weird subject perhaps, and I'm putting in newbie corner because frankly, I don't know where it fits.

I've got a 32:9 monitor, which I am very happy with. However, it is a pain switching between using it as a single large super ultra wide, and two 16:9 monitors, which a builtin function in the monitor allows, not least because when in PBP mode (whatever that stands for), certain features are somewhat limited, for some odd reason, and I only have the option of splitting up into 2 section: 2*16:9, 21:9+11:9 or the ladder in reverse. Would be nice to have more flexibility.
So I am thinking that there must be some way of achieving the same effect in software.
In short, I want to be able to run a program in fullscreen mode, without it taking up the entirety of the screen. I might want to watch a movie while working on something.

I don't know what to google for to be honest, thus if a solution exist, I haven't found it.

Depends somewhat on client behavior (and maybe driver), but you can usually use randr 1.5 virtual outputs:
