Wanted: Launcher that allows navigating .desktop files by category

I'm looking for a stand-alone (eg, no DE required, no DE-specific panel/bar required) launcher that automatically reads my .desktop files and shows them in a UI-driven menu grouped by category so I can navigate installed apps by category without remembering their names.

(I am not looking for launcher that requires I type the name of the application I want to launch. I already have that. It must be navigable by menu only.)

Use case: I'm using i3 and want to be able to open a menu that will allow me to browse a list of apps from a list to find seldom-used ones that I've forgotten the name of.

I've used mygtkmenu which works fine, but it's drawback is that it doesn't automatically discover .desktop files and the menu has to be kept up to date manually. I would really like something similar that auto-discovers the .desktop files.

That app has an updated -git version, and there's many more standalone menus in the AUR, some use GTK, others don't. Most definitely at least some of them are dynamic. Have you tried jgmenu?
