Random logout

I have no idea what's causing this, and I can't pin it down to any sequence of events. Sometimes (not regularly by any means), I will suddenly be logged out of my desktop. In the past, I've been able to log back in, but then there are usually some stability issues until I reboot. After a reboot, things are usually good again.

I can be using the computer all day every day for a week, and then suddenly, out of the blue, boom.

It just happened, and so I grabbed the Xorg.0.log.old as follows. You can see the point it logs out, but I can't see anything to suggest why. Where else should I be looking?

Re: Random logout

journal, coredumpctl - that server terminated cleanly so what most likely happening is that your session (desktop environment, resp. the session keeping process) crashes.

Re: Random logout

It looks like dbus is crashing from my limited understanding of journalctl. This is from immediately before (yet another) logout.

EDIT: I'll leave this here in case of ideas, but in the meantime, I have an NVME M2 drive due to arrive tomorrow, and the plan was a simple rsync, but I may just get a list of installed packages, reinstall from scratch, and then copy custom edits from /etc to the new drive. /home is already on a separate drive, anyway, so shouldn't be a major job to get a clean install configured identically.

Re: Random logout

Yup, but the coredump is rather shallow.
Are you sure this isn't a follow-up thing? Anything preceeding the dbus-daemon segfault? (I/O errors or so)

There are a bunch of sensord alarms filtered out (nothing untoward, just misconfigured alarms out of the box, that I should get around to fixing).

Re: Random logout

Yeah no - it really crashes right out of the blue.
Do the crashes in other journal sections look the same?

If there's no clear pattern, you shoud run memtest, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/St … ing_memory but if it's always the same (dbus-daemon, similar pointer) there's probably just a bug in the daemon (weird, though)

Re: Random logout

I'll try a memtest run overnight (to give it a fighting chance).

I went with a full migration to the nvme, so if it's a software fault, it should persist. I suppose it's not inconceivable that there's a SSD fault, in which case, migrating should fix it.

The problem is the unpredictable nature of the problem hmm

Re: Random logout

And, of course, I managed to screw things up completely, so I have been forced into a fresh install (yes, very much a user error). Fortunately, I had sufficient /etc file backed up to get me going, and /home is safely away on a separate drive, with a complete package list on an NFS drive, so I'm almost back to a working system (well, it IS working, but I'll need to do some configuring).

On the plus side, if my problem goes away it's a software problem. If it doesn't, it's either something in /home or a hardware problem. I'm hoping for the former.

Thank you for your help, and I'm sorry I was dumb enough to trash my system before exploring reasons further.

On the positive, 1,406 packages that I don't have to wade through to install again manually.
