Dear Kernel Maintainers,
Next time, please do us the favor to include a visible notice on installing a kernel package which will break the current menu.lst .
Though, no problem, but i had to boot once again the arch disc from cd, mount my boot, lookup what changed, change the config and so on.
Would be much easier if it actually was mentioned.

It is displayed during install. There should be a message at the stage where mkinitcpio creates the images... Are you sure you looked through the output of pacman?
Haven't been here in a while. Still rocking Arch.

It did not about a week ago but it does now ....
once everyone has gone over to mkinitcpio then things will calm down ;-)

I'm sure i looked trough the output.
The update came a while ago, i just didn't reboot the machine (since i rarely reboot at work).
The only message i could find about this was the sticky of James here on the boards - but seriously, i don't look here for every update .
I can ensure you that there definitely was no warning when i got the new kernel package, since i always look trough the pacman output, especially on system package chagnes.

Sorry, my fault. I update my systems quite often and have updated the kernel package at least 5 times in the last month. I haven't realised that there wasn't a warning every time.

The update came a while ago
How long is a while? 2.6.18 moved to current on 27 Sept, accompanied by a related news item here. There were a couple of lead-up threads here and here, and pacman would have displayed the required information - the install script has not changed since 20 Sept, when the kernel went into testing.
If there are better ways to handle all of this, submit feature requests to flyspray.

I have kernel26 ignored in pacman.conf for that reason
Have to load it on its own if I want it by running pacman -S kernel26 that way it does not get lost in other updates ...
I can watch output edit/run lilo as required
Last thing you need is a system that will not boot

Well, can't say very exactly. The main thing is the package mirror i chose isn't very frequently updated (gd.tuwien.ac.at), and i also don't update very often.
My package mirror didn't provide new packages over the last week though. Maybe i should be thinking about another mirror, but as i know it's the only arch mirror located in vienna. Not always needed to be that on-the-edge anyway ^^.

It might be worth asking the tuwien admins if they can update more often. If not, I can't imagine it would make a noticeable difference to you if you switched to tu-chemnitz.de, or any other European mirror.
As for updating often/being on-the-edge - it's your choice, of course, but Arch's structure means that it works best if updated often.

The mkinitcpio changes had been mentioned months before over and over again.
However, not having a message on the actual update was a poor choice on our part. I will make sure that this doesn't happen again.

there are no humans on the internets...
The suggestion box only accepts patches.

Well, there's no real need (usually) to update more frequent.
Though, phrakture there has always been standing "soon" and again "soon" and so on. The one update there stood nothing (well, maybe this should have made me thinking) crashed my system - that's what should not be.
I basically dont care which changes come soon, i care about the changes in the current version, so when will it crash my system and what should i do about it.

Actually, the messages were not about changes "soon" - they said "change your system, as this will be deleted soon".
