[SOLVED] How to keep the same local IP address when updating?

Hello!

Yesterday, as usual (I do it at least once a day), I performed an update:

sudo pacman -Suy

After that, the local IP address of my computer has changed: it was 192.168.1.60, it's now 192.168.1.61. Why is that? I don't know specifically what has been updated that causes this change...

Is there a way to always keep the same local IP address?

Thanx for any help!

Not helpful at all. Of course the answer is always somewhere in the wiki; now, this is a very long article you refer to, and you only refer to the whole page; furthermore, english is not my native language, and it would take me hours to read all this... Could anyone be a little more specific, please? Thanx in advance.

Re: [SOLVED] How to keep the same local IP address when updating?

If you're using DHCP, it's possible for the address to change if your DHCP lease expired. So you get a new one and possibly a new address too.

Although that usually doesn't happen for a machine that is used regularly, and doesn't change its network interface (MAC address).

If you want to make sure, set up a static IP configuration. Then you'd only get weird IPs when booting a Live CD where the configuration is not present.

Re: [SOLVED] How to keep the same local IP address when updating?

Thanx for the answer. Does this works for a local IP address too? It's not fully clear for me: a static IP configuration would be static both locally and remotely? (I mean: for my local network AND for the Internet?) Or is it possible to set a static IP configuration for the local network only?

Re: [SOLVED] How to keep the same local IP address when updating?

I guess you are connecting over a router. You can either configure your router to give your device always the same IP address or you follow the Wiki and configure a static IP address on your device.

You can configure only your local IP address yourself (the 192.160.1.x). Facing the internet, you have an IP address which is assigned from your internet provider. As long as you do not pay for a static IP address, that one can and will change but you are not able to influence that.

Re: [SOLVED] How to keep the same local IP address when updating?

Thanx very much for the answer! It makes more sense now.

I think the easiest way is to set the static IP configuring my router, so that it persists after a reinstall, if needed.

I have a "DHCP Binding" option in my router configuration page, I assume that must be it; however, nothing happens after setting a specific IP address for the MAC address of my computer (and rebooting my computer). Should I reboot my router too?

Yep, a reboot of the router did it. Easy-peasy!
Thanx for the help!
