Solved: Sorry for botherung you. In the end I found it to be a hardware problem. Got the adapter card running when installing it without the bracket.
I have an Arch installation booting from a 256GB Samsung NVME SM961 M.2 (MZVPW256HEGL-00000). My motherboard Asus B150M-C has no M.2 slot, so I use an M.2 to PCIe adapter. This combination works fine.
Because I need more storage space I bought a Samsung 500 GB Evo 970 NVME. However, this SSD is not recognized using the same PCIe adapter. The SSD does not show up in the OS or in the EFI firmware. I tried an alternative adapter which also did not work. The Evo 970 itself seems to be okay, because is works with a motherboard that has an M.2 slot.
Any ideas on this problem?

Out of curiosity, i read the manual of your motherboard here.
Have a look at the part regarding expansion cards. It might have something to do with IRQ of the device. It's a wild guess but might be worth having a look.

Yes, it might have something to do with IRQ. I read the manual but there is no hint what I could do. I think nowadays IRQ handling is more a task for hardware and software developers. Also, I already tested the adapter, when it was the only PCIe device. Shared IRQ should be no problem in that case.
