[Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

I would like to try xfce 4.3.99.1 (Also known as 4.4 Beta1). Is there an Arch package that I can use? I am getting to like xfce more and more. BUT, xfce dosn't seem to be popular with Arch users.

Thanks for any insight, jimbo

Just from surfing the forum. There seems to be more interest in KDE and Gnome.

Good luck, jimbo

AFAIK, we have plenty of xfce users - so don't worry, you're not alone. smile

What is the secret? All I can find is version 4.2.3.2.

Thanks for any additional help, jimbo

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

I am actually thinking of changing to xfce, simply because it is more lightweight compared to gnome. But I'll stick with gnome until the new version is released. If it still hogs my ram, xfce it is tongue.

There are xfce svn packages in mousetrap repo. Svn version is basically the newest version available.

Add mousetrap repo to your pacman.conf and enjoy :-)

--edit--

And here you can see that XFCE actually seems to be the most popular option amongst forum users.

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

To spell it out even more clearly:
add

[mousetrap]
Server = http://arch.os-zen.net/user/shadowhand/mousetrap/packages

to your /etc/pacman.conf

refresh your repository lists

pacman -Sy

Install xfce4-svn

pacman -S xfce4-svn

There still seems to be a few bugs and/or dysfunctions, but nothing major. It's all very useable and nice.

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

Thanks for the replies. I now have Xfce4 4.3.99.1 installed. I have two problems; I can't get any terminal to start. The menu item does nothing. And I can't get desktop icons. In a different distro, I start Appfinder, then just left click and drag to the desktop any program I want. That doesn't work with my Arch xfce4.

Any help will be appreciated, jimbo

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

install terminal-svn for terminal and thunar-svn for filemanager, both in the mousetrap repo

Have you tried to turn it off and on again?

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

I have terminal-svn and thunar-svn installed. I can get a terminal window, but I can't get desktop icons. That is the main reason I wanted to get XFCE4 version 4.3.99.1.

Help, jimbo

Look into settings-manager, in one of the perferences, I think "Windowmanager"  or "Desktop" you can say that xfce4 can "manage the desktop"

Yes, it is in "Desktop Setting", it is checked, but I still can't get desktop icons.

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

There seems to be a bug in xfce in the current svn that causes desktop icons to not be allowed. I'm sure it'll be fixed soon..

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

I'm at work right now, but if I remember correctly there does seem to be a bug.

In the settings manager, desktop settings and choose allow xfdesktop to manage desktop (or something similar). That should show you home/filesystem/trash icons

I think if you right-click on some of the icons there will be an option to add icons on the desktop. I'll check tonight...

Ciao

Do you have a ~/Desktop directory? Is xfdesktop running? Any warnings printed when you run xfdesktop inside a terminal?

For what it's worth, I do have a ~/Desktop, no warnings are printed, and my only options in settings for desktop icons are 'None' or 'Minimized Application Icons'.

Yes, that is what I have with the Arch installation. On a Debian installation where I do have desktop icons, the choice is: None, Minimized application icons and File/launcher icons. In Debian, File/launcher icons is selected.

Good luck, jimbo

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

Okay, I filed a bug report about it and the xfce dev fixed it (http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2388). Next shadowhand update and icons will work.

Xfdesktop is fixed in my repos now.

You managed to catch an update that just happened to have a bug with xfdesktop not showing desktop icons for anyone, even thought it was built in. smile

And just to be clear, this is NOT xfce 4.3.99, this is xfce-svn. It's even newer than 4.3.99.  lol

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

Shadowhand, I just installed your updated packages (I didn't have them installed already), 'cause I felt like giving Xfce another go around.  Some things were really messed up.  Settings Manager didn't work and neither did the menu editor.  Then when I did (for some odd reason) sudo xfce-settings-show it worked, but everything started lagging.  And menu editor wouldn't save properly.  Then when I logged out and logged back in, the panel was gone and the panel section of Settings Manager didn't function properly.  So I uninstalled and went back to OpenBox, but I still find the funkiness really weird.

EDIT: By the way, to install I did: pacman -S xfce4-svn xfce4-svn-extra

I just spent all afternoon failing to get xfce4-svn to work. I started with a fresh install of Gimmick iso. Add mousetrap repo to /etc/pacman.conf. Then pacman -Syu and editing /boot/grub/menu.lst so it would boot. Then a fresh install of xorg, xorg-apps, xorg-xdm, xterm, and xf86-video-nv. Then configure with xorgconfig. Everything worked OK. Startx brought up the usual cheesy two GUI terminal windows.

Then pacman -S xfce4-svn.

startx fails with several messages about missing files, no such file or directory, etc. Changed PATH to include /opt/xfce dirs.

Now startx brings up a black xfce desktop where none of the panel icons work, no right click menu, desktop settings to allow xfce to manage desktop does nothing and won't stay clicked. In short, a totally useless desktop and I was not able to fix it with endless "fixes".

Oh well, Arch is easy to install and Xfce 4.2 does work.

Good luck, jimbo

Re: [Solved] xfce 4.3.99.1??

Jimbo: I can assure you that your experience is atypical.

Thinks to check:
did log out after "pacman -S xfce4-svn xfce4-svn-extra"?
try "rm -rf ~/.config" and start xfce with "startxfce4"

Try those and get back to me. The install of my packages should be entirely painless as long as the proper steps are taken.

EDIT: if those steps still don't work, try this (as root):

useradd -m -s /bin/bash xfceuser
passwd xfceuser
gpassd -a xfceuser video
su - xfceuser
startxfce4

That will create a new user, change to that user, then start xfce. If that works, it means something is screwy with your home directory, and you need to clean it out, or remove your user and recreate it.

Thanks, -Shadowhand
